Ponderings and introspections.

This is a blog about me, by me. It is primarily for recording thoughts and things I find interesting.

In less than six hours, I’ll be leaving for the airport.  A short 5 hour plane ride later, I’ll be landing in the Big Apple for the first time.  26 years on the planet, I’ve traveled half the world, and I’ve never seen the east coast of my own country.  I am stoked.  As always the camera gear is coming with, so plan on a slew of photos upon my return.  Until then my friends, I’ll see you next week!

You need to try Joe’s Shanghai, it’s the best authentic chinese cuisine I’ve had…ever. And by a long shot! It’s fantastic, if/when you go there, you must try the pork soup dumplings, they are absolutely to die for.
A good sushi place near the lower east side of manhattan, near Greenwich Village, (an interesting part of new york worth checking out, it’s full of all sorts of eclectic shops, punk rock shops, tattoo shops, head shops, etc. is Shima’s Japanese, 188 2 Ave, New York, NY. Great sushi, decent prices…love their kobiko sauce that they put on shrimp tempura and dragon rolls.

I think of spicy food like I think of horror movies.

They’re both just disguising something that isn’t that good, that probably could have been great with the right flavor. Plus, I hate things that depend on shock value for attention.

1. “I hate things that depend on shock value” sounds a little funny coming from someone who only blogs about A.) having a vagina, and/or the goings-on therein, and B.) wiping up liquid shit.

2. What does “flavor” mean in terms of horror movies? Are you saying horror films would be better if their scripts were rewritten to make them action movies or romantic comedies? Or is it just a shitty analogy?

3. Anyone with taste buds can tell you that there’s such a thing as food with the perfect amount of spice, just as anyone who’s seen a movie before can tell you that there are plenty of legitimately well-written, well-acted, well-directed, even critically-acclaimed classic films that fall under the “horror” genre.

Horror films and spicy food are both amazing things.  Good luck not being able to enjoy awesome things forever.

Agreed. Maybe if you weren’t such a wuss you’d be able to enjoy both spicy food and horror movies. Also, note the difference between the “horror” and “gore” genres, and yes, there is a difference. (If your comment was made out of the release of Saw 17, or whichever one they are on now.)

Tell your taste buds to grow up, and then stop checking under your bed at night. Then, you might enjoy spicy food and horror films.

Africa Bound and a bit for camera buffs.

In 4 more days, I will be done with finals for the semester…and Africa bound, aboard the M/v Liberty Glory as a cadet. I’m slightly freaked out, but surprisingly complacent with the thought of being out of country for a third of a year. I’ve got 4 more days of finals, then I go home for a week…I’m going out to see my best friends, out in Iowa City for Halloween weekend, so that should be a blast.

Anywho, a bit for you camera buffs.
I’ve recently just gotten a Canon SX120 IS Powershot, my first truly completely adjustable and functional camera, with full toggling between variable ISO speeds, aperture values, and shutter speeds, along with a handfull of other features.
So I’ve tried my hand at HDR photography, and I’m curious as how to not get slightly washed out images. I’ve tried with -2,0,+2, interval exposure shots and -1,0,+1 shots, but when combining into an HDR shot using Photomatix Pro, the images look slightly washed out. Any suggestions? And the moon photo is slightly distorted, shot at ISO 80, F4.3, 1/60 of a second. How can I improve my shots? Any feedback would be useful before I go out to sea.HDR shot 1

Your Race Affects Whether People Write You Back » OK Cupid Blog
Before you say anything - it’s actually well done and an interesting read.
The OK Cupid staff processed some raw data to find out exactly how users matched across race and subsequently, how users respond to others across races. The results weren’t particularly shocking as I am living it everyday, but still, to see this chart I get a very real physical reaction. A general malaise. In short, Black women are the least desirable women on the site. And overwhelmingly so. I mean look at that sad pink/orange bar.
In the comment’s section of the post, hundreds of faux scholars (idiots) drolled on about how this data doesn’t mean anything, and maybe it’s just CULTURAL differences, maybe more black women are fat. Maybe more black women use bad grammar/text speak. It’s totally not racist to not want to date one race. It’s just a preference!
I wish there were a sound associated with plainface, blank stare blinking - the sound of eyelashes going up and down. Because that’s what you’d hear from me right now. Toothsuck.
I agree that a preference and inclination to your own race is not racist. But the buck stops there. EXCLUDING races is, in fact, fucked up. It’s not racist in the sense that Blacks riding in the back of the bus was institutionally racist, but I mean, come on.
In the article, they also display users’ answers to the question “Would you prefer to date someone of your own race?” Non-whites answered around the 25% yes, 75% no range while white men and women were around 45% yes. To this one man replies:

“The second question was worded as “Would you strongly prefer to date someone of your own skin color/racial background”. I answered that question “No”, because I’d be fine dating white, middle-eastern, latin-american, native-american, and asian women, but I’d simply not be attracted to african-american women. That is NOT racism, however – I work and socially interact with black women, and don’t have any problem with it. Developing an intimate relationship, however, is a very different thing.”

I would date every race except black bitches. BUT I KNOW BLACK LADIES SO I’M TOTALLY NOT A BIGOT. A lot of people think this way. A fucking lot. On the one hand it’s hard to fault people for being products of their environment - that is, finding attractive the people we are TOLD to find attractive. But on the other, I’m not about to give everyone a pass because “that’s just how things are”. My ass, you can kiss it.
It’s hard for me to really explain how it feels to be a part of the group that is overwhelmingly undesired. To be seen as universally unattractive. Of course there are so many factors that led to how this data came to be, geography, age, culture and so on, but let’s not kid ourselves. The data would tell a similar story no matter how you slice it.
The one group that has it worse that us - Indian men. Where my Indian fellas at? Let’s commiserate.

Interesting….
